I recently discovered the song Exhale by Plumb. The opening lyrics
"It's okay to not be okay
This is a safe place
This is a safe place
Don't be afraid
Don't be ashamed
There's still hope here
There's still hope here
No matter what you've done or who you are
Everyone is welcome His arms
Just let go let His love wrap around you
And hold you close
Get lost in the surrender
Breathe it in until your heart breaks
Then exhale
Exhale"
brought tears to my eyes and goosebumps to my arms. I was reminded on my entry from last November titled " I'm OK, Not Being OK"
Our church has begun a new sermon series and is launching a ministry that I'm excited about. Celebrate Recovery is the recognition that we all have baggage. We all have unhealthy coping strategies and make poor choices out of our hurts and tendency to believe the world's lies rather than the truth, power and grace of God. There is no judgment on your faith or maturity. There is also no expert pretending to have an answer to all of your problems trying to fix you.
The sermon series our preacher is starting is called Baggage Claim. The sermon series can be found here starting with the sermon on July 26, 2015 titled "No One is Perfect" I cried during worship time on that first morning, because it was such a breath of fresh air. "Church is where you take the mask off, not where you put it on" Because it's what I've been wanting and needing to hear about God and from His people. It's not a new concept or even the first time I've heard this from a pulpit. The reason it resonated so strongly with me is this has legs to it. They aren't just talking, they are living it out.
I want to be done feeling like an outsider. These are my people, I can't be shocked by the sin inside anymore than the sin outside. If I somehow put Christians up on a pedestal, I'm buying in to the lie that we can obtain perfection and we don't need the grace of God. If I say I or they should know better and shouldn't stumble, doubt, question, or sin, I'm believing head knowledge is sufficient for heart life changing transformation. If I compare sins, I'm living as thought I don't need or want forgiveness and that it's not equally available to every person on the planet, bar none. In many ways the church is zero different from outside the church. We somehow expect ourselves and each other to be perfect and when we aren't, we cry hypocrite just like the rest of the world does. Maybe to some degree, we want to believe perfection is possible and life could be easier and fixable, more able to control and less likely to be hurt, betrayed, abandoned, what ever your worst fear is. Life is not formulaic. It reminds me of my early 20's, you know I can take on the world, I had all the answers. Oh vey. Part of me believed at the time I had to be that oblivious and feel bullet proof with some degree of an arrogant attitude because otherwise I might run form adulthood and all it's responsibilities, failures, the unknown and the pressure of all the life deciding decisions on my shoulders etc.
Not for one minute, do I believe shining God's light is about perfection and meeting standards and laws. Standing up for what you believe in with conviction, kindness, love and courage is not limited to professionals, the most mature, the scholars, the benefactors of christian royal lineage. It's for every person whose heart has been impacted by the love of God and finds redemption in the blood from the cross of Jesus Christ dying from our sins. I believe the glory of His love does include law, but that only comes ( at least for me) after the love, grace, redemption, support, encouragement, prayer and being a friend. He shines brightest when we accept our need of Him. He is glorified when we stop trying to think of our own answers. He reigns supreme when community and vulnerability is present. It's not about the short sale and the notch of success on some mythical spiritual tally. It's commitment, loyalty, love, perseverance. So much of our society is geared towards our comfort, ease, entertainment and success of self and I formally reject it.
If I never share another message about faith. If this is my last post about 'religion' (such a small world that doesn't begin to adequately define or describe God) I'm ok with this being the resounding echo that I stand for.
I'm at a place where I know diversity is essential or pride and comfort seep in. In life, I can recognize when I'm starting to only want to acknowledge the positives in my life choices and the negatives in others. It's a lose-lose game. The temptation to internalize, take it personally, feel judged or somehow codependently require those I let close to me to only be like me. I never want to lose the ability to have a meaningful loving conversation with someone who disagrees with me on every point and we can still walk away with respect, love and kindness. While I do want to be known more for what I am passionate about and champion and have a heart to go to the mat for; saying I don't like or chose something isn't a slap or judgement to everyone else who disagrees. It's okay to be different, it takes away nothing from you, including respect and love if I don't agree with you and vice versa.
There is a beautiful place between the misnomer of labeling everything all right/ no one is wrong and the idea that your particular way of living out your faith is the only right way and everyone else is weak, immature, not faith filled or wrong. I don't know about you, but I'm living the honest learning curve, effort and mistakes of life in balance with God. I'm running the race to be hot or cold with out selling out. I had a get real or move on struggle in the Spring -that I'll post about another time, but this is the ongoing results from that including to find honest community, forgiveness, authenticity and vulnerability in all the mess of every day life. Life, me, you, church, politics, education, work, our country and world peace is a process. I don't have it all together, most people know they don't and I challenge you to accept that no one else does either. There is no perfect 'they". Practice makes progress, but there is no perfection this side of heaven.
Have to edit and add with this song my friend posted today by Mercy Me called Greater.
There'll be days I lose the battle
Grace says that it doesn't matter
Cause the cross already won the war
He's Greater
He's Greater
I am learning to run freely
Understanding just how he sees me
And it makes me love him more and more
He's Greater
He's Greater

A season
Our realtor told us that the average homeowner moves every 5 years.
The highest risk for divorce is between 5-7 years.
The seven year itch of infidelity in a marriage is a well known cliche and movie.
Recently I have heard the phrase more than once of 'friends for a season'. High school, college, singles group, new mommy's etc ...
I wonder why that time frame? Has the thrill and newness worn off by then? Have the differences overshadowed the similarities ? Have the little misunderstandings , nicks of hurt feelings etc outweighed the compassion and support the relationship has provided ? Is it just not convenient and with the passing of time has the original circumstances that brought you together not present anymore and the relationship can't survive outside those parameters?
That's when the real work begins . That's when loyalty rises. That's when the relationship is tested . The tension , the awkwardness, the unknown of it all , the feelings are pushed through or people move on.
We live in a culture of convenience , easy and comfort . We can easily place our self in a bubble with no friction. We chose who to friend, who to follow and who to type to. We can easily avoid any conflict or emotion. We join what ever social media group with like minded individuals so we never have to discuss or be faced with differing viewpoints . We rest easy in comfort, encouragement and validation with others like us. We lose the ability to appreciate , value and see the benefit of in 'others'. We find ourselves only liking and commenting on those we can relate to.
This isolation can be shallow and safe and selfish . I do it too. I join group upon group for ideas , inspiration and growth in the areas I want to. The rest ? Well, I rationalize I can't be good at everything and those people have their own inner circles to encourage them . I only have so much time and can only make so many close connections. I get ... Comfortable
I want to leave room for God's refinement , to be challenged, to be used outside of my comfort zone. I do want to continue to grow as a person , but I don't think I have to chose between loving people and trusting God. That's why we are here to extend Gods love first and figment . If I'm remembered for nothing else when I'm gone is that I loved well. God's love is sacrificial (not in a unhealthy way), it's faithful and it's unconditional. I am called to reflect my maker. May I focus my perseverance inward, my drive for accomplishment in competing only with who I was last year.
Love the song from James Taylor, "You've Got a Friend". It reminds me first to reach for Christ and it's the same way we should be there for each other.
Love the song from James Taylor, "You've Got a Friend". It reminds me first to reach for Christ and it's the same way we should be there for each other.
Yesterday while watching a movie with my husband for his birthday, a few remarks stuck with me:
"Just because someone stumbles and loses their path, doesn't mean they're lost forever. "
"It's not their pain you're afraid of. It's yours, Charles. And as
frightening as it can be, that pain will make you stronger. If you allow
yourself to feel it, embrace it, it will make you more powerful than
you ever imagined. It's the greatest gift we have: to bear their pain
without breaking. And it comes from the most human part of us: hope.
Charles, we need you to hope again."
I really think when emotions get involved and we don't know how to reach each other, we give up. It's overwhelming, scary and our past with conflict rises up and paralyzes us. Rather than admit vulnerability, we back away. Maybe we point fingers, maybe we just feel like a failure, but rather than push through, lean in and fight for the relationship. We make peace and move on.....
Most of all, 1 Corinthians 13 definition of love comes to mind and it's summed up with verse
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. Faith as defined in Hebrews11 "confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see". and hope won't be necessary in heaven anymore either because it will be fulfilled in Heaven. I might as well work on selfless, unconditional chosen love because I'll be spending eternity doing it.

Worry about Yourself
Have you seen the YouTube video of the little preschool aged girl wrestling with the buckle on her car seat? After presumably being offered unwanted help, she lets her daddy know he should just "worry about yourself!"
I think that sums up my connection with people right now. The desire to feel connected, included, valued is just not clicking. I have to look inward and figure out why not and why it bothers me so much that it is not. I'm not encouraging selfishness, there's more than enough of that to go around. There have been some great reminders from a friend and from our bible class to look inward and manage my own emotions. The reminder to not be codependent on others for validation, worth, value, support, encouragement, etc. etc... The reminder to not pour that out on others or put the responsibility on them for my ability to be joyful and peaceful. God gives me my worth and in a world of convenience and ease, hard internal work is not valued. Easy, comfortable, fun is. Goals and achievement are of high value while being lost is people, their needs, hearts, hurts and disappointments. As long as I look put together, successful, talented, confident, I have succeeded in Image Management 101. I've successfully added to the Stained Glass Masquerade that Casting Crowns sings about so beautifully.
I came to know Christ through a good friend's invitation to church in high school. I found a wonderful supportive, accepting teen group that I went to summer camp with for a few years, travel teams ( it's a lutheran youth group thing) retreats, etc... Then we all graduated from high school and everyone went their separate ways to college, military, etc. Still rather new church girl, stumbled and slowly, never intentionally slipped away. A slow fade if you will, little choice by little choice. In college, I met a few Christians through my part time jobs, but those eventually faded out as well. I'll be clear, it's absolutely no one else's job to uphold my faith, define me or give me value. 20 years later, I know that. Then, I was just stumbling and didn't see anyone else around me weekly going to church, to read the bible, answer my questions and pray with.
Why is this story on my mind? Because I've been going through a major social change. I've been very hurt by the lack of support and presence of long time friends. I ask around and everyone else accepts the change, moves forward with little emotion and a rather positive outlook about the difference. I'm a major introvert with a quality time love language. Making good close friends where I can be transparent and vulnerable is HARD for me. I am convinced that I get worse at it the older I get, I may be becoming more set in my ways....:-/ Finally, in my small group last week after watching a video of Matt Chandler sharing a portion of his conversion story, I get a huge lump in my throat because I'm relating and also because God is working on my heart to give me a sense of peace and healing for the rising panic that's been in my heart for months.
I'm not that 18 year old girl anymore. I have an amazing God fearing husband, other friends and most importantly I KNOW I can trust God to not let me go. I know how to reach out to Him and renew and ask even when I don't know what it is I need at the moment, because my Creator does. I can have peace and let go, moving forward happily and with love because I have all that I need. I can't nor do I want to guilt, put pressure or passively aggressively send out subtle messages. To be clear, this is my struggle and if it hadn't been this circumstance, it would have been another one. God had work to do in this area and I'm SO glad He has.
Mind you, I knew a change was coming with our non-traditional educational choice, I just thought I had one more preschool year before I had to do so. God has other plans and let's be honest it's always harder when He reveals is plan to someone else and not directly to us when we are so personally effected.Getting on board with God's plan and timing for me has always included feelings of discomfort, anxiety, confusion and loss of my dream. In hindsight of other times, God has ALWAYS had great love, grace, growth and mercy in store. His plans are always better.
That dark time away from God in my early 20's humbled me. I eventually came back with an fire I didn't have before, a recognition of my personal and specific need for Christ's grace. I made the poor choice, but God used it to grow me and I have the faith and trust in Him that He will continue the good work He's started in me until I get to see Him face to face.
Is there anyone that fails
Is there anyone that falls
Am I the only one in church today feelin' so small
Cause when I take a look around
Everybody seems so strong
I know they'll soon discover
That I don't belong
So I tuck it all away, like everything's okay
If I make them all believe it, maybe I'll believe it too
So with a painted grin, I play the part again
So everyone will see me the way that I see them
Are we happy plastic people
Under shiny plastic steeples
With walls around our weakness
And smiles to hide our pain
But if the invitation's open
To every heart that has been broken
Maybe then we close the curtain
On our stained glass masquerade
Is there anyone who's been there
Are there any hands to raise
Am I the only one who's traded
In the altar for a stage
The performance is convincing
And we know every line by heart
Only when no one is watching
Can we really fall apart
But would it set me free
If I dared to let you see
The truth behind the person
That you imagine me to be
Would your arms be open
Or would you walk away
Would the love of Jesus
Be enough to make you stay

I'm OK, not being Ok
So... I haven't done a heart post in quite some time. This should be a doozy. Read at your own risk :-) I may make you uncomfortable. You may roll your eyes. You may disconnect and click away at any given moment. You may absolutely disagree with me. You might see where I'm coming from or fall somewhere in between. Either way, the words need to come out. They may not all be wise, but they'll always be honest.
Lately, the fact that I wasn't raised actively going to church or really knowing much about God has been on the forefront of my mind. Who am I kidding? Before that it was my age and before that something else, I'm sure homeschooling or another non traditional family choice we make. I am confident in our choices after prayer, research and discussion with my husband, sometimes I just wonder where we fit in making the choices we do. The one constant theme is a feeling of not quite belonging, of not quite getting all the unspoken rules and expectations. A feeling of being an outsider within my adopted family of faith is being felt even after 13 years of calling believers, my family. Rather than bury it, I've been talking about and wrestling with these feelings of loneliness. I'm leaning in rather than escaping and avoiding.
I started going to church in high school when a friend from my soccer team invited me to her Lutheran church. The mention of the denomination only matters as there have been several and explains some of the habits I have from the various exposures as well as the lack of loyalty to one denomination. I'm loyal to God and His church... ie. family of believers, not the name on a building. Let me be clear, my journey with church, in regard to both it's beauty and imperfection is still an ongoing refining process that God is working on for me. I know for sure, I need a group of people who are trying to follow God, obeying His laws, showing His love, serving His people, Forgiving 77 x 7. Will those people at times judge me, hurt me, disappoint me, misunderstand me and reject me? Absolutely, they have and will. But, after all the friends I made in high school youth group went off the college, I found myself floundering, big time. I didn't know how to keep leading the life I had been shown and wanted. There was no one to ask questions, lead me in scripture, pray over and with me, give me encouragement and tools to grow in the faith I was just starting to understand. I saw in my friend's family a peace, a kindness, a difference that thanks to social media I know still shines from them today. They loved me and provided a refuge from messy home stuff that is with out price. I learned shortly after coming back to church ... first a baptist church, then a Jewish temple, followed by a one time stint at a church that referred to God as a she, to eventually find myself in a Church of Christ. The CofC was the first ones to tell me that God wanted to know me, wanted a personal relationship and that I could be completely myself with Him. I finally got what God had done for me and for the first time felt accepted, loved and forgiven unconditionally. I can't speak for any other nonbeliever, but I never decided to follow God out of a need to follow rules or to be told I was wrong. He did and does, but I knew already by then how much I was loved and that made all the difference. I wanted something that nothing else on earth could offer and I had tried a few very sad poor substitutes.
I shared many details of what I'm glazing over when I returned as a prodigal daughter. I felt the rejection, the awkwardness, the distance. I don't think God's people often know what to do , say, react to the degree of brokenness that's out there. There is a certain insulation that builds misusing certain scriptures about being set apart or unequally yolked. If we as believers truly want to reach a lost people and I truly believe that is the heart of believers to share the peace of God, we should be girding each other up to do so. Are we really shocked when Satan gets a foothold, when people stray, when sin abounds??? We have three sons and we homeschool them and plan to for the foreseeable future to give them the strongest foundation in faith, conviction, family and truth as we possibly can. It's NOT to put them in a bubble out of fear from a fallen world. It's to prepare them for everything that Satan will throw at them. Just like the disciples when they were mature and ready, these three amazing young men will launch in to the world and make the difference that God has created them for.
When we are in the degrees of sin and the justification of our own actions in the comparison game, arrogance will win. Disdain for the sins of others will prevail rather than the bond of being fellow sinners. We grade and elevate others while minimizing and justifying our own. If we believe what our bible says, the continuing spiritual and moral down trend will occur until Jesus returns. It's not going to look more like heaven down here, it will continue to resemble it less. No one seems to know what to do with that mess and even more so as a single woman, I was told they would not chose me for the reasons I so blindly trusted strangers with because I felt lead to share. I do still share with those who I believe God is leading to me who can directly relate, receive comfort or benefit in some way with what God has done in my life and where He saved me from and how He can and will do that for others. The sharing is now with discernment and only after someone knows my character, my heart, my intent and quite frankly, doesn't scare easily. Why did I change? Because honestly I do care what people think and how they treat me. I'm not bullet proof but I'm working on getting my value and worth through God alone. Part of me is mad at myself for being quieter and part of me believes I don't need to throw pearls to the swine. To a degree, we are supposed to be uncomfortable, we are supposed to be stretched. We are supposed to be out of our element to be reminded that only through God's strength can we face our Goliaths. Where I'm at sharing details now is that the pain from those early years is not something to be handled lightly and I am not at a place to again knowingly give someone power to yield over me that has not in some way proven that they will handle me and my past, present and future with compassion and love. Godly and brave? No. Honest? yes

No. Honest? yes
Why do I care so much about the church's reaction still? I still have family I love with all my heart out there who I pray passionately know the love of God. One of them is making steps towards church community and reading her bible . I pray she is welcomed in to a community who will love her and she her Jesus. They aren't my project, I'm not trying to convert them. That's Gods job that only He can and they would have to want to accept that from Him. I will love them until the day I die no matter what they chose in life. I love them as unconditionally as I humanly can because that's what God has done for me. I owe them that. Get this, I'm the most soft spoken in my family. Where will they fit in? Who will accept them showing that God will too?? Who isn't going to gossip, get defensive and judge them? I know we are all fallen and can't be all things to any one person. BUT, We have to be willing to try to reflect as much of God as we possibly can. The Good Samaritan comes to mind who was willing to go past just awareness and pity keeping a 'safe' distance to get involved, get dirty, go out of his way to help and be there in a real way that made a lasting difference. Our prayers to deeply connect in a real world past the questions , 'Do you know Jesus and here's how you get to heaven' it's not about sign ups, it's about walking life together in love, grace and truth. Just love them, no matter if you can relate or not. Give them grace even when they don't think they need it. Trust that God is in them, created them, loves them and wants them even if they reject it, see not only their potential but the beauty they have now already and that God couldn't love them anymore if they changed everything that God didn't agree with. Rules didn't draw me to God. The thought of hell didn't draw me to God. Scandalous unfair, undeserved love drew me to Him. His word lead me the rest of the way, working through how others lived did.
So if I'm to live as a light sans the hell, fire and brimstone , lecturing and judging then when, not if, I fail I am working towards being honest, transparent and sharing that with others. I'm not going to lie, it's unconformable, risky and vulnerable. I'm not in this life just for me and my image . Everyone knows everyone else does struggle, but we hide and combine that with the superficial social media bragging of what we are doing, how we are doing it, what we are buying , with who and how often reeks of pride and selfishness. Keeping it real is about our hearts and minds as much as the mess in our homes and with our kids. You will see how I deal with hardship when I have God. Yes, it's hard not to want to bury that and pretend it didn't happen or to want as few people to witness failure and pain as much as possible. But we are light shiners, its not about us, it's about showing Christ to everyone. It's not for the weak, the safe, the calm. It's for the bold and the meek. I as a later Christian, start expecting life to be smoother, more calm after all I've been through and then I remember if I wanted easy, following Christ was not that choice. It's counter cultural to love when you want to attack back, it's against our nature to forgive when we want justice. It's hard to be selfless when we want our way right here, right now.
I haven't posted a thoughtful post in quite some time for several reasons, new baby, sickness, sleepless nights, fuzzy brain, etc etc... but I've come to realize much of the reason was just wanting to not stand out and feeling as if there are so many opinions by people with far more experience, maturity, knowledge, wisdom and faith than me. I start being mad at myself for conforming to the silence. Then I buy in to the thought of why bother? I'm pretty sure several ideas or sentences I've already written were inspired or repeated from small group, mom to mom, bible study, this week's sermon or a conversation with a friend of family member. Do I have something of value to add? God's word tells me yes, everyone does. My words aren't a new revelation. Ecclesiastes says since nothing is new under the sun. I realized it doesn't have to be earth shattering and explosive. Media reflects that perspective that only shockingly polar opposite view points get the attention. There is value in a still small voice. There is a reason why God put me here and it's to shine what ever light I can in what ever size of a circle of influence I have. God can and does turn every story in to a testimony if we are brave enough to step out and share. I don't think it's ground breaking , attention seeking or narcissistic to want to have your voice heard, to be understood and to want to understand. It's human connection and we all crave it to one degree or another. As technology changes, so does our avenue to express ourselves. Written words are far easier and less awkward to me than the spoken one, says this introvert.
So, these rules and unspoken expectations and reading between the lines are exhausting at times for me. I don't think anything is resolved by not talking about it. when peoples differences outweigh their similarities it requires thought, respect and loving the person more than the cause. I couldn't disagree more with the idea that 'everyone knows that'. I can't imagine why one person believes that 6 billion people on earth should all be on the same page and know, acknowledge or play by a series of rules and guidelines that aren't communicated. You can expect them, absolutely but I believe you will be setting yourself up for disappointment and hurt and the other person up for failure and judgment every single time. More often, as I've passed the 40 year mark, I just want to be 5 years old again, where everyone is friends with a hi and let's go play with out agenda beyond connecting, sharing and getting through life's joys and sorrows so you're not alone. I can't imagine the hurt and other situations others have experienced where that doesn't become an option for them. I, of all people with all my past baggage, make friends and build trust very slowly. While I completely believe no one can ever really 'earn' your trust, respect and love since we are ALL fallen , broken people living in this world. I don't do so lightly. I can be a challenge and jump in to what I believe has the potential to be an inspiring conversation only to have misunderstood that nothing was to be said by anyone else. I leap before I look in a often times desperate ( at least it feels like that internally) attempt to relate to another human being and feel less alone. Potentially pathetic and overwhelming and clingy to others if taken too far? Absolutely.
The baggage I referred to is in large part what inspired the words to come out. I do have lots of it, I'm not blind, stupid or in denial. That baggage is messy and rears it's ugly head in insecure, immature hurtful ways to the people around me. Does that make me unsafe, unhealthy, flawed, imperfect, toxic? Do I have unhealthy coping and defense strategies and mechanisms? Absolutely, all of those things. Who really doesn't???? But get this..... I'm ok, not being ok. I have not given up having God work on me and refine me through His transforming power, grace, love and never ending mercy. But, I know I will never be all put together, whole, healthy and sound this sound of heaven. I refuse to strain, and try to refine my own self because the results are temporary and shallow. Too much of the world and not enough God will result in me doing what ever I think is unthinkable. I am not above any sin or the ability to hurt myself and others in profound ways. There is absolutely nothing wrong with mental health support and assistance. I have reached out and benefited from trained caring people more than once in my life. I'm not putting people in the position of savior, healer or said trained professional. Often times for me, it's just validation, connection and support. To just listen, not fix, not judge, distance, worry or lecture. To just be there is an enormous gift. To say , you're normal, I get it. I struggle and to share, to let down their own walls and be emotionally accessible and present. To minimize, encourage or cheer up, only seeing the bright side is what I used to do before real life struggles started hitting me. Life's disappointments, hurt and pains are a journey and I trust wholeheartedly that God will walk by my side to a place of gratitude, repentance, joy, peace and purpose. But that won't be because of any one denying that something is bad or that it did hurt. Whether you agree with or would feel hurt also is irrelevant. Whether you would handle it in my messed up way or your own messed up way is just semantics. It's real to me and just as it would be for you. It won't define me, there's no need to panic. Not because I'm so strong and perfect, but because the one I trust and lean on is. The rejection or lack of acceptance will not make me feel better, it will just change my desire to communication openly and honestly with you. Life is hard with real struggles and real pain and pretending it isn't doesn't solve anything. Especially if we both believe in the power of God's ability to not leave us and to love and comfort us in all things.
In my immaturity and inexperience, I have shied away and was easily overwhelmed by other people's emotions. We all have our varying lines of what we can do and how much we can be there for other people. I rely and am in desperate need of God's strength and the changes only He can work when I am open, broken and hurting. The enemy would lure me to believe this wouldn't be the case if I grow up with the additional foundational years knowing and learning Christ. But, logically I know that's not true. Real relationships are messy. They require work, forgiveness and layers of communication from the mundane, painful, awkward, humbling, joyful and saddened. Close ones require authenticity, vulnerability and trust. Emotions I've come to find out in the church are a debated topic. The conservative thought is not to be lead by them or be manipulated by them, to have a tight self control over them so we don't sin. The liberal side saying we are to be lead by the Spirit and be joyful - it is a fruit of the spirit. God created us and our emotions, they aren't the be all end all, but they aren't to be feared either. Emotions can be intense, grief over my sister the last ten years at times knocked my breath out. While I wouldn't advocate it, I completely understand the desire to numb that intensity in what ever unhealthy way the world offers. Denial, drugs, workaholic tendencies, the list is endless, temporary and futile. They always surface, I may be able to talk myself out of something now but eventually they demand our attention. In a perfect world maybe on the other side of life here is a place of balance of emotion and logical/ heart and head. I don't know one single person that has mastered that act. Some dive head long with out thought of preparation or consequences. Others who can talk themselves out of anything with risk, with a challenge, that don't want to be stretched and grown with out careful loss/ benefit risk analysis. Yesterday, in our bible class time, the phrase was shared, we treat people how we treat God and vice versa. When I'm hurt, offended or disappointed am I backing off, rejecting, losing the benefit of the doubt? Am I making people earn me to a level no normal person can? What does that say about my relationship with God??
Truthfully, I tend to be more of the emotional side. As I've gotten older the slowing down, talking through, working out details has grown and had practice. It does not come first. In my marriage, I'm often the mad cap I Love Lucy with another off the grid idea that my husband has a list of, have you thought about this ____ replies. After almost 10 years of marriage, we make a good team and balance... most of the time ;-) Differences aren't a threat, an attack or a judgment, but a reflection of individuality and that's ok.The challenge arises when we only want and value our own approach and way to tackle life's issues.
When I'm empty, it's easy to turn a circumstance in to a complex. It's easy to pick out the differences and reject rather than wait for what feels like an inevitable rejection. It's easy to believe the nice words others are saying are just 'kindness' and not truth. It's easier to believe the worst. It's easier to take offense. It's easier to withdrawal. It's easier to use people and love things. It's easier to look for what ever requires the least amount of self reflection to fill a void. It's easier to hide behind words and projects and excuses. It's just easier to not do what's right, what's best and what will benefit myself as well as yourself in the long run. It's not that I can't or that I don't know the correct answers, I'm just empty. Where do I start climbing my way out? I know there's light, but what will make me want to do the work to get there? For me, it began with 4 people truly caring and being all in.
So, over the last 7 months of adjusting to being a family of five, the gamete of new scenarios, opportunities and circumstances have been several. With little sleep waking up by a child's cry and falling asleep sitting up soon after the house gets quiet, the tank goes towards empty. The ability to navigate roles and juggle responsibilities is even more compromised. The social, spiritual, physical, extended family and marital needs and commitments suffer. Lord willing, in our family we are coming out of survival mode more aware of what pulls us from each other and God. We aren't stronger, we are more pliable for God's work in our lives and more aware of the needs around us that we can meet as fellow sufferers. We are more aware of the need for the ultimate connection to be able to pour in to every other relationship that at times can both fill and drain us. The one source that's never ending will fill all of those other roles, bringing gratitude, love, peace that passes all understanding and a love that's beyond our own capabilities. In our brokenness, walls come down. We are better parents for being in touch with our struggles, brokenness and humble awareness, acceptance and need of the grace of God.
Our preaching minister has been going through well known people of the bible and being really honest about the struggles, the flaws, the sins, the insecurity, the rebellion, the disobedience. I'm a little late to the party as the series is in it's 8th week. I'm catching up during quiet time when the boys are playing in their rooms during the week. I needed this. I'm giving a big sigh of relief. I feel like I've hit a bottom lately with things I can't control like hormones, sleep and schedules as well as my own lack of focus and filling with my own time with God in a meaningful way that's just about Him and me. I'm starting to feel 'normal' and needed the reminded that He equips the called, He doesn't call the equipped. God can use the broken, the flawed, the sinful, the messed up and I'm SO GLAD because my list is not pretty on paper of the mess that is me and the fact that God isn't scared off, detoured or indifferent, but so invested in me that He has a purpose for me and will use everything to reach others. I just need to stay present and available. I need to be ok, not being ok. Are you?
So if I'm to live as a light sans the hell, fire and brimstone , lecturing and judging then when, not if, I fail I am working towards being honest, transparent and sharing that with others. Summer and Fall 2013
Here's the catch up I've been working on for a while now.....
In many ways, this year was a quiet summer with out my usual outlet here to get some things off my chest. In other ways, it's been a hectic summer with two moves. First in April to an apartment with a broken foot and finally in August to our new home that was finished being built. Our old home sold in two days, so while that let us off the hook of having to worry about two house payments, we also needed to find a temporary place to live for 4 months with my broken foot and two very active boys under the age of four during a hot summer. We also experienced a miscarriage in that time period as well, our second in as many years. So ,in a way I'm glad to have that time to solely process and frame all that happened in a way that allows movement, healing and going forward. In the fall, after setting in to our house we discovered we were pregnant again. We were much slower to announce or share even with our closest family and friends. The roller coaster had taken it's toll on our hearts, mind and bodies as well. Building and growing a family has been one of the most faith building struggles and exciting period in my life. I'm incredibly grateful for the privilege to carry a child, for what ever time has been allowed. I'm grateful and humbled when I have met both of our sons. As I am both a third child as well as the third of the same gender, I was truly so excited to discover the baby I'm now able to carry is a precious boy as well. Not just 'another', not a consolation prize, not a disappointment. Girls are amazing and I grew up with two wonderful sisters, but also knowing that my oldest sister had three beautiful boys before leaving this earth and never got to meet mine makes me feel indescribably close to her and like a beautiful gift. Losing her was the most painful shocking thing I've experienced as an adult and this does feel like a gift from God because He knows. We have a small family, but in my heart I really have a big one. I think of the failed adoption attempts before having Matthew and the now two babies waiting to meet us in heaven and I can't wait for us all to be together one day.
I've put off blogging too because in many ways when I'm pregnant I feel raw, sensitive, exposed and emotionally a bit fragile. I'm sure anyone reading this is running through and reading it normally silently to themselves. I am wiping tears from my eyes every few minutes, because life right now is so beautiful. I know there are no guarantees in life and I treasure and am so undeserving of the place God has brought me to right now. God blesses us all massively and uniquely and individually because of His great love for us. It's overwhelming at times what He allows us to do even though sin is still in my heart, mind and life every day. Selfishness, impatience, irritation, judgement, resentment, taking offenses and giving them, missing opportunities to be generous, inclusive and grace giving. The list for this is also massive. It's what keeps me close to the cross.
I was so thankful in a recent discussion of the mommy wars on comparison, judging and competition that someone lovingly said, "I don't care. I don't care what other people are doing with their children and families." It wasn't an uncaring statement, she's one of the most tender hearted compassionate people I know. The truth in that is so freeing. It's not a contest, this is no ONE way. We aren't cookie cookies, God works through our lives in a unique way just as He does through yours (who ever is reading this) and they are both beautiful and flawed and exciting and bittersweet.
I am enjoying the sweet kicks of this little guy. I'm enjoying having a 2 & 1/2 year old and 4 year old who are playing more and better together (not 100% of the time of course) but do have this growing beautiful relationship. I am enjoying play dates and crafts and baking and homeschooling and Christmas Advent and even the recent ice storm that kept us indoors for 5 days. I'm humbled to apologize to my children when my selfishness overrides what's best for them and how God has charged me to be stewards of their souls and hearts for such a short time. My goal isn't independent children ( they will HAVE to depend on God to get through), or responsible children (our economy shows us hard works doesn't owe you anything) or even just kids who believe in God (most of the world does that with no relationship, sacrifice, yielding of will or even a nod at the grace, obedience and light of God) I needed some refocusing, to remember over the last 8 months that moral, well behaved children isn't my goal. Passionate followers of God willing to trust God with wherever He leads them to further His cause is. I also needed to know in my heart (it was in my head) that boys are different, not worse, not better. Just far different than the girl lead house I was raised in with a strong single mother and a baby brother who was vastly outnumbered. They are gloriously strong, smart, funny, spirited, physical and hands on. I'm so glad I'm not in what I was comfortable and known, because then I could rely on my own experience, strength, knowledge and strength and I would fail as I've always done when that happens. I'm unbalanced, awkward, making mistakes, trying again and learning and praying and asking forgiveness. It's beautifully messy and I wouldn't trade it for all the confidence in myself for anything.
Hard Lessons
I've cross posted these last couple of posts because the topics have a direct impact not only on our family but our daily learning process through homeschooling as well.
It's only fair after talking about the celebrations of childhood, that I share a post that is not about achievement, success, resources or advice. This is what I call one of my cathartic, just for me, wordy posts. The kind I convince myself no one reads so I can just process in words and move forward. To be honest, I'm struggling here. I've hit a point in parenting that's got me praying, seeking, searching, talking, hoping and crying for guidance. I read articles like this or this and many others searching for how to raise our boys to glorify God and want to be with Him for ever in Heaven.
God has graced me with two beautiful boys who are incredible. I have no doubts God will use my 3 year old for His great purposes. He has a strong will, persistence and don't take no for an answer personality. He's a leader, he's smart, he's creative and he views obstacles as challenges to overcome not a reason to change course or his mind. I love my son with everything God gives me in parenting. I know God equips me and my husband along the way. I've been at this impasse before from baby to toddler and now that's it's preschool to little boy, I'm lost again. It's not the first and it won't be the last transition with growing pains for our whole family. We do have a 20 month old too who I am sure will give me a run for my money with his smile, extroverted personality and charm that snares everyone around him.
I've asked moms ahead of me in this journey. I pray, I read my bible, I read parenting book after parenting book. I'm sorry to debunk the flowery sentiment but my love is not enough. Hear me out, before you shake your head. I am a selfish, broken sinner. Left to my own devices I raise my voice, I grit my teeth, I act spontaneously and re-actively. I doubt, I get insecure, I question.everything.
Every child is different. There is no systematic approach that works with every child. There is just the basic need for a Savior. There is the recognition of humbleness in the face of my child and to apologize when I fall short of the being calm, in control with faith, love and grace in responding to my child. It does not weaken my authority to admit I'm wrong. I've been a kid, I knew when my parents messed up. Me admitting it is just being honest and saying what we are both already thinking. In those moments I live out the scriptures that God is made perfect in my weakness. Because man, I. am.weak.
This isn't an all out pity party or seek of attention or passive aggressive reassurances. God gave me, like everyone else strengths, other experiences, other advice and ways to reach and comfort others. If this isn't yours, I ask for grace and to recall what yours are and treat mine with the same tenderness you'd want when you're feeling broken and helpless.
There are definite seasons of life- seasons of encouragement, joy, hope, celebration and also of discouragement, desperation and failure. Nights/ weeks/ months of interrupted sleep, days of disobedience and no naps. Minutes, hours, days of serious boot camp intense character training for both me as the parent and my children. Taking, pushing, yelling, screaming, temper tantrums, name calling, lying, rebellion, lack of cooperation, disobedience. It's those moments when nothing seems to reach my child. Not tough love, not empathy, not boundaries, not the most recent parenting book approach ( love and logic, love languages, etc) It's just the commitment, loyalty and love to the little person who I KNOW is inside there struggling too. I know my child. We spend every day together. He's capable of being sweet, caring, thoughtful, smart, resourceful, funny, playful and plain irresistible. He will ask "Are you happy, mommy?" if he hears my throat get choked up and my voice get soft because I'm trying not to cry. He has a tender hearted mommy, oh the irony. He's in there struggling alone. I feel like I don't know how to help him out of this. I am trying to walk him through these moments, to understand himself, God and the world around him and the wall is solid and heartbreaking.
I put my adult mommy boots on a trudge forward. I have a mission. I have boys to love. I have men to raise. This task is not for the weak, the lazy, the easy, comfortable. After 3 years of praying, crying, begging the Lord for a child, I have two amazing sons. I couldn't be more thankful. It was not an easy road to get here after two failed adoption attempts and a failed reproductive procedure. I pray constantly to be faithful to the calling of parenting. His light is for my path, each step. He doesn't provide the answers for the entire walk nor is he obligated to share outcome ahead of time. Deep breath now. Step, trust, love, give. Fill myself up daily with the love of God.
There are just those seasons where adult life and parenting life are both a hard struggle. I pray to teach my children grace because it's the only way they'll ever understand Jesus. Also, because selfishly I KNOW I need it from them through out their life. Anyone can get children to obey through force, absolute authority and sternness. At my core, I believe there is a way that shows respect and love to my child in teaching, correcting and training.
Also if the majority of our interaction is just rules, correction and discipline, where is the relationship of family? If I have my guard up all day long looking for mistakes, where is the connection? There are many other nuances of communication necessary for a healthy functioning family like encouragement, listening, understanding, instruction, teaching and prayer as well as others. Warnings, rebukes and corrections are necessary especially in these younger years but they are not isolated or communicated with out love.

Lessons in the Everyday
As we have been wrapping up our Valentine's focus and moving towards the season of Lent and Easter, I have holidays on my mind. I post our seasonal learning, fun and focus like Halloween here and what our Christmas traditions are here, Advent activities are here and here and when we also have Happy Birthday Jesus party. I blogged about Lent here, Easter here, Valentine's Day here and Thanksgiving here.
What are we trying to convey to our children? We are showing our children that there is no secular and religious. There is no place Jesus is not welcome in our lives. God is in our every day. Going to the grocery store, watching a video, playing a super hero, making a tent. Not cramming, lecturing, preaching, but loving, forgiving, learning and having fun. Was it awkward for me at first not coming from a Godly worldview childhood? Absolutely. But most of my decisions, actions, words, heart beliefs, opinions and views have constantly felt that since the age of 16 when I began knowing God in a personal way. So glad that God's grace covers our parenting!!
Regardless of who first started celebrating something and why, we will continue to invite Jesus in to our every day. I draw materials, crafts, projects and ideas from a myriad of both protestant, catholic, Jewish and non faith based sources to teach my children about Christ. The idea itself is neutral. if it brings my children to a closer knowledge, intimacy, faith and trust in Christ, I'm there. It is my God given responsibility to talk about Christ and point my children to a Godly world view. We frame the books we read, the videos we watch, the projects, the activities and the crafts we do within the goal of glorifying God and our desire to live with Him for ever in Heaven.
As much as I enjoy our children's holiday books that are straight forward about the literal portions of faith within celebrations, there is something so ingenious about those materials that take the every day and draw the reader back to Christ. I get giddy whether it's a candy cane at Christmas drawing a similarity to the sweetness or the letter J or the color of the blood of Jesus OR the Pumpkin parable that talks about how we are like a jack-o-lantern whom Jesus opens up, cleans out and replaces His light inside of us TO Easter where an empty egg can serve to remind us of the empty tomb when Jesus rose and conquered death for us. Celebrations are amazing hill top parts of life. In a broken, fall world where there is death, disease, violence, hurt, pain, disappointment, hunger, frustration, poverty and broken hearts, homes and lives our hearts yearn for the beauty and the glory of God. In every day life we draw comfort, guidance, acceptance, forgiveness in our Creator.
I can teach my child every bible story, I can try to the best of my human broken ability to be the Godly influence for my children that He calls me to be and I would still only be creating a christian culture. I could have them memorize scripture- which we do- cover our weekly Godly character lessons but if the very reasons for why we do what we do does not guide our children back to glorifying God and our desire to live with Him forever in Heaven it's falling short. Since our weekly time with my friend's little girl ended a few weeks ago I began going to a weekly ladies bible class again as well as meeting with a friend monthly to discuss Godly parenting books. God is using both of these simultaneously to focus, simplify and be intentional in Godly parenting. Our mom study has been talking about a parenting mission statement. I'm also particularly inspired by this book, Shepherding a Child's Heart:
What's my purpose as a Christian parent? It's not behavior modification. It's not control, appearances, manners, and it's not success or power in any shape whether physical, financially, vocationally, academically, socially, morally or even just to get my children saved. It's to glorify God and the desire to live with Him forever in Heaven. Tedd Tripp introduces his book in the first few chapters talking about how we are created to worship. We are not spiritually neutral. We were made to worship and we will worship someone or something. In the end, I have to remember in this SAHM culture that it's not about a Pinterest board, Facebook photographs, learning activities, faith based crafts or completing a set of tasks either with or for my children so that my house and children all look successful from the outside. Yes, God can work in all of those things but they are not the goal.
It's about faithfulness not success. There is no one systematic approach to crank out Godly children. We can only control the influence we provide, the rest is entirely based on our children's response. No one has it down, unfortunately all of those phrases we tell ourselves pre-child as to how our child would act, react, accomplish, not struggle with etc...to help keep the lack of control at bay are unrealistic at best. Am I drawing my children's hearts to God? Am I setting biblical standards and goals? Am I showing the love of God and others? It's not about being in church when ever the doors are open or being the most polite, well behaved, obedient or succeeding at bible bowl. My goal isn't the right camps, schools, college, marriage, job, children etc for my children. They aren't a 1950's felt board. They are a flesh and blood human creation of God and HE and HIS plans are what matter for my child. It's about the heart, the motivation. Our children can and will make choices partly based on what we show and tell them has value and partly on themselves and how they react to their life experiences. Make the focus of discipline a reward and punish system, they'll learn to ask what's in it for them. Make it about praise, chastisement, people's feelings, making friends and they'll learn to please you and eventually everyone else around them. Make it about achievement, accomplishment, image and they'll learn manipulation of themselves and others to be successful.
We can't automatically assume they will make the connection one day that their heart belongs to God. The world certainly isn't going to help. One hour of bible class (and for the record I LOVE my boys bible class teachers, our children's minister and our church family!!) a week isn't going to make it every day real that we treat others with respect not just because it's good and moral, not just because it will hurt someone else's feeling but because that other person is a God created individual whom God loves as well. It hurts God when His children are mistreated and that includes by us. How are we to train our children to react if someone else hurts them or fights? Do we tell them to just walk away, stand up for themselves, tell someone else? Or do we bring them back to God's word? Do what the bible instructs to pray for those that hurt you. We are called to love our enemy.
We must understand and have open communication with our children. A conversation with our children is not just us talking. It's us listening to the heart of our child and not with the goal to correct. Our children must be given a safe place to talk, open up and fail. We must meet them as both their authority and a fellow sinner. I must keep in mind to be strong enough to lead and also be vulnerable enough to share my own failings. I must follow the example of Christ and be a servant leader. Only God can give us the strength to live out His ways on earth. Those ways include not gossiping, not judging, forgiving and seeing other people better than yourself. It's really hard to be angry with someone you're praying for. Is it daunting? Yes! Is it possible with Christ? Yes! Not perfectly, but again, it's not about success, it's about faithfulness, repenting, forgiveness between us and God and living in the hope and strength of Christ to lean closer, learn our lessons and apply it to our lives. God will give us another chance when we don't get it the first time!
Of course, that means I am called to model that for my child. Of course it's not easy, but God's way rarely is. It's hard because it's not about us and our needs, it's about glorifying God with our hearts. So yes, that's why we read our bible and pray to have that connection so that we can understand what best glorifies God. We read the bible not for the rules or heroes (because everyone God used was flawed save Christ), but to understand His love and how to glorify Him by sharing that love with others. We can only do so plugged in to God by asking for His strength to battle against our own daily flesh and selfishness.

The Outsider
Our topic in bible class this morning is still on my mind. I spoke up with a thought I had from an outside perspective of not growing up in the church.............. and then just like that I felt like one, an outsider. I rarely think about it in those defining and separating terms. It's a struggle at times to be a first generation Christian with out close example or mentoring. There are times I am tempted to revert back to what I have known and been comfortable with, what I was brought up with and then I remember I'm not that person anymore. Some of those unspoken expectations I've written about before truly are off putting. I have had people question my love for Christ simply because how I did it didn't match up with theirs. My husband who does have generations of believers that came before him patiently and with compassion walks me through it. He's told me that I challenge him and keep him from being stagnate. There are strengths from both that God works through daily in our immediate family of four. We often refer to our home as our bubble. The outside doesn't penetrate that which God has set apart.

| God's direction |
Then I look to God and remember I belong with Him. I pray and read His words and I know I'm where I'm supposed to be. I hold my husband's hand and am thankful for the life God's brought me to. I giggle with my 3 year old or cuddle my 20 month old and I forget about labels, receptions and looks from other people. I remember what God has done and how He's always been there even when I didn't see Him and didn't know how to look for Him. It makes me want to help others know the peace and joy.
We all have a testimony, a unique story to point others back to God. I could spend my time just blending in, denying that I'm different. But, I'd surely miss a front row seat of God's work and being used by Him. I could waste my time on my wants, conveniences, irritations and personal needs or I can trust God. I can go on about how the world doesn't look like heaven and rave about injustices, different opinions and judge others intents, mistakes and past. I could waste all the time God has granted or I can chose to be satisfied right where I am. I can chose to be self conscious and worry what others will think about me or KNOW how God sees me and admit specifically my failings, past and present messy circumstances. I can doggedly find out what all the correct 1950's things are to do in the church so I can be part of the in-crowd or I can have peace being myself even if that means sticking out and being different. I can search for identity in a clique based on my same age, past, college, marital status and children's ages or I can appreciate each person and their reflection and value from God regardless of how much or little we have in common. I can be so concerned to checking off my to do list, being successful, well dressed and well versed or I can risk looking foolish and just be ME knowing God has got this. I want to set that example for my boys, to risk, to be brave. To be bold and act on faith. To grow daily in their understanding or God and His calling on their lives. I have to remember the reason for everything goes back to God and His love for us. That my focus is to bring Him glory by loving Him and everyone around me.
One of the many ways that homeschooling appeals to our family besides focusing on our particular schedule for daddy's work, faith, family, being a good steward of His finances is that it's more like normal life after school. No where else after college are we only surrounded by people within 10 months of our age either way. We chose that afterwards because that's what we've had for at least 13 + years. Yes, I also know especially belonging to a church with a preschool attached we are still seen within our own church as outsiders due to this choice. I don't make the choice to be labeled that, it's simply what God has lead us as to what's best for our family. I'm pretty convinced God doesn't care about the name on the building of the church I go to. I also remember God being there as we sought through prayer and counsel what was best.
We live a gluten free life style due to Celiac. I make most of our food from scratch including bread due to our health condition. Reading ingredient labels began ensuing research on manufactured and processed foods. The fewer and the simpler the ingredients that comprise of the foods we ingest, the better example we can give our children to nourish their bodies in a positive way so they will have the strength, health and energy to pursue God's plan for themselves. We are on a road to researching more homeopathic approaches to every day medical concerns due to side effects, gluten risks and the desire to avoid putting even more chemicals in our body. It's all very... granola. As a young girl, I thought I would be the successful career woman who through liberation was in control (ha!), and had the means to have mundane things like my house cleaned and my food cooked. And now that I'm approaching another decade I realize my goal of success had zero to do with handing over the reigns of control to God. It was about me. It's simply not where God and health has lead me and I couldn't be happier with the reality.
We are seeking to glorify God through a simple lifestyle. We don't want to get so caught up in running around accomplishing, accumulating, doing, succeeding or striving for earthly things that we forget to be faithful. I want to abide in Christ with out distraction. I want to trust with out reservation. I want to grow with out hesitation. I want to know Christ intimately with out any separation.

Loving People While Having Our Own Purpose
My favorite line from the movie "City Slickers" is
Babies are calling, nap time is over. God's grace covers.....
Curly: Do you know what the secret of life is?
[holds up one finger]
Curly: This.
Mitch: Your finger?
Curly: One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and the rest don't mean.... 'uummm anything' (edited by me)
Mitch: But, what is the "one thing?"
Curly: [smiles] That's what *you* have to find out.

I run the race doing my part to the best of my human ability with the much needed help of the power of Christ. God has a purpose and calling specifically for me. Currently that is homeschooling my two sons and being a wife to an amazing man. There were times in my life it was going to school, the Ukraine, ministering to my family, participating in Friend Speak, etc... There is a season for everything -Ecc 3:1. I've been in mourning, in celebration, in frustration and in fear. I know what's it like to be running away from God and to desperately seek a specific answer from Him. I have wasted dark days being luke-warm, confused, angry, hurt, afraid, confused, and cold. I have peacefully and with peace been joyful in His presence, thankful even when the answer wasn't what I wanted, pressing in to Him as I sought answers, healing and forgiveness and calm in the midst of a storm. Looking back, I learned something from each and grew closer trusting in God. Probably not as much as God might hope, but I did.
God made many members of His body of Christ- Romans 12. Somehow, some times we think that everyone should have the view point, prescriptive, talents and abilities we do. There are times (years, months, day, moments, seconds) that I step over the line of respect, love and honoring of another God made creation and I question their heart. I question their motives. I judge their decision and minimize their value. This article has been replaying in my mind today. I wrote recently about a few mean girl experiences of my own and yet I know that there are situations where I'm the lead character for someone else and it pains me. Satan has worked through me and brought pain, doubt, anger and fear. As gifted at the Lord has given me through mercy and compassion, I'm not perfect in any area. We are at the very least oblivious to the social ques around us and at worst behaving out of revenge, spite, anger and hurt. We got the zinger, we made the point, we had our laugh at someone else's expense. We put them in their place, taught them a lesson and showed them how much we found them lacking.
When statements born of our own inner conviction starts with "Well, everyone should know that", It's so obvious", "It's a given"," That's the minimum", "That's common sense", "They should have known that", "I would never" then we are pressing our expectations wither spoken or unspoken on to someone else. We assume our view is the only correct, right, best way. Everyone else will fail in our eyes. When someone's goodness, kindness, patience or love is responded with, "That's what they are supposed to do", "That's the least they can do", "It's about time", "It should have been done earlier" we fail to appreciate the heart and the giver. We feel owed, entitled, that we've earned what we have received or are due what we've been short changed. Instead of saying "Why Me?", we could start asking "Why Not Me?" or maybe pray to have the strength to say,"God, what would bring you the most glory here?" with out thought for ourselves.
We confuse needs and wants and everything is flipped upside down. We operate out of a system where cause, materials items, our comfort and our personal best overshadows the wants, hearts, needs and desires of others and most importantly the will and plans of God. We become self focused and driven. Make no mistake, that will always end in someone else's pain. The ripple effects of our selfishness starts hurting God and out own connection with him and spreads outwards like a pebble in a pond. It's doomed to fail and effect more of our choices in an ever widening path as the justifications seep deeper in to our core beliefs. It's not balanced with the needs of others. There's no room in there for giving, serving, humbling ourselves. When do we admit we don't know everything? Social media (like Facebook, Twitter and blogs) gives us glimpses in to each others lives and I'm thankful for that but let's not forget, it's never the whole picture. We need to remember only God knows their heart. When do we start supposing the best in others and give them the benefit of the doubt? When do we stop jumping to the worst conclusion? When do we stop our cynicism, skeptically based critical thinking? When do we remember that it's a human defense mechanism and a very poor substitute for the peaceful wisdom and protection of our loving God? When do we realize we are hurting ourselves, limiting the love of Christ and the possibility of God's given purpose in that moment? When do step down off the thrown of our own human knowledge to have figured it out, not be taken or made a fool of? Is that why we are here? To protect ourselves? The main calling and the great commission has nothing to do with self and everything to do with the purposes and main objectives of God. Spreading His nature, His love, His message. He does care about our hurts, our disappointment and there is no substitute for the power of His healing grace.

Our view point becomes our idol. The more that any one else's weaknesses don't come to our acceptance, the more people we discard. That's our society's ways. Replacing, upgrading, the bigger-better-faster, name brand, latest, most expensive 'IT' thing means value and security. That broken philosophy then bleeds over to people, that people are only in my life for a season. I'm sorry to disagree with the pretty flowery statement, but really? The heart of that statement says to me I can replace you, you're not needed anymore here. It's all about me. I'm on to bigger and better things for myself. I can make peace with cutting someone out of my life because it suits me. Our causes become more important than people. Our stands, our view points, our approval and support is our idol. You may disagree whole heartedly with my view on that and have very sound healthy reasons for it and we would have to agree to disagree. I'm not saying you're wrong and it would not be your place to convince me like wise. The work of the Holy Spirit is stronger than any word, any fact, any experience you have to draw from. There are places where I'm sure we shall both not be moved. It doesn't make either of us wrong, it makes us normal, human and individually God created. When those differences begin to define our relationships and mark others with a one dimensional label that overshadows the complex and diverse individual make up of another person, we've lost our way. We are the resounding gongs Paul warns about in 1 Corinthians 13.
We are not carbon copies of each other. God and the world doesn't need more than one of me or you. To expect someone else to be at ... ahem... our standards is selfish at the very minimum. When the differing views of any two people become the basis of elimination of the relationship, I think it's a fail. I've said it before and I'm sure I'll say it again. If you're looking for someone that is going to agree with you on everything, look in the mirror. That's the only person who is going to agree with everything you think, do, believe, say or act on. A view point born of pride and the inability to to interact and meet someone else willing to know their heart. Not with the mindset to change their way of thinking or to use the Christian word, convict their heart but to know and love another person different from you. We all are different with backgrounds, experiences. I grew up with three siblings, same house, same parents. We are all vastly different people. It's not just about influence, but reaction. Two people can see the exact same event and will have completely different experiences. Just because you would do more or something different or would never do that does not excuse the cold hearted hateful words towards another human being. Regardless of the tone of our voices, that's the tone and color of our heart when we fail to see the good in the person and praise it. God has challenged me to find good in the people I least relate to, agree with and understand.
I also don't believe in pity friendships either. Everyone deserves to be appreciated for who they are and what they have to contribute. If truly you can not, with Christ, find it in yourself to see just one thing of worth, of good report in another human being than walk away. I challenge each of us to press more in to God. I'm sure there are critical arguments against what I'm saying. I would counter by saying very few flaws in other people are as dramatic as the labels people give them excusing their behavior. I know, I've done it and it was hogwash. I just didn't want to do the work. I wanted to throw my pity party giving the litany of things they had done and excusing my responsibility. Each person has the image of God within them and if we are so clouded in those moments with our own pain then walk away and pray. Give your heart to the Father and pray to see that person with the eyes of the One who created their inmost being and would die on the cross solely for them as well. With humbleness we recognize it's us lacking the most in those moments. God grieves when any of his children are hurt by one another. Hurting people hurt people and God alone has the ability to stop that cycle.
God IS love- 1 John 4, it's not something he chooses to exercise only in certain situations. It's an intrinsic part of his make up. Love is who He is. What ever our cause, our conviction, our beliefs, our traditions, we are never excused from living those out with love. Passion, purpose, opinions and facts are pointless. They become semantics and detrimental used as a weapon to hurt. Let's not try to convince ourselves that it's a faceless, large group of "them". We are efforting to depersonalize the damage we cause by not putting a specific face, lives and hearts to what we consider to be inexcusable. We are just another creation, we are not the Creator. He alone has decided the law, the penalty and the price for it being broken. It's already been paid for each one of the "thems" and for us.
Just because you wouldn't do it, doesn't mean it's not forgivable. We all have our temptations, our flaws, our weaknesses and our sin currently every day in our lives. Let's not forget that our enemy is not of flesh and blood but of spirit. Yes, I believe this applies to politics, religion, life style choices, lies, betrayal, abuse, criminal activity etc. God's loving guidance knows no boundaries and doesn't selectively apply to only certain personality types, circumstances or situations.
Live the purpose God has individually picked out for you, but never forget to do so with love. Only you can do it.
Scripture says it beautifully here:
Love for Enemies
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[i] and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

A Changed Life
Within the Christian community there are unspoken norms and behaviors. I wasn't raised in a close knit faith community. I do not have behind me generations of people in the faith. High school youth group is when I began learning. I was surrounded by a group of God loving, kind, fun and very forgiving people. The journey to Christ did not run smooth. After graduating from high school and losing that group, I had lost the support and only people I know and felt safe. I felt like I no longer belonged. No one in my family could lead me through what to do or where to go next. It would take me several years with much heart ache and seeing the natural conclusions of some faulty beliefs to get back to pursing Christ. By then, I had become an adult surrounded by a group of still loving believers and while they were forgiving as well, the mistakes I was making were adult sized ones. I know my lessons were painful for not just me, but others as I struggled to navigate how to belong within this frame work. At first I felt as if I could be more of the real me with my non-believing friends, because it seemed those whom had been blessed to grow up with in the church couldn't relate what I had to share. From my outsider perspective, they seemed to recoil when specifics were brought up of my childhood and the years spent not recognizing my need for God. I felt most at home and still do to a large extent with those who are openly broken.
I respect self control. I'm over all a positive person who believes the best and strives to see the good in people and circumstances. I appreciate having normal light-hearted fun conversations, but at the core of how God made me there is safety in vulnerability, honesty and transparency. Chit chat is not now, nor will ever be my preferred method of interpersonal communication.
Don't get me wrong, I don't find joy in complaining because God doesn't. I embrace the hope, comfort, peace and security of having God in my heart. I understand I can't be best friends with everyone I meet. We all have full plates of immediate and extended family, work, home and other priorities and responsibilities. That being said, I sense a certain amount of raising futility within myself of seemingly endless circles of surface conversations.
When someone opens up their world and their heart along with all of it's imperfect beauty, something in my soul rises in admiration and respect. There is a heart connection in those moments. There is a freedom that allows one to speak or write. The expression itself, honors that part of themselves that can't be quieted. Whether that's out of grief, disappointment, hurt or anger; those emotions have been given a place of validation. I'm not suggesting to give them free and complete reign. Emotions themselves are neutral. The decisions, choices and thoughts we chose to respond with are the defining factor reflecting our foundational beliefs, views and opinions.
As a believer in a loving, just, powerful, omnipotent, forgiving, law setting, accepting God, I am called to go first to my best friend, creator and Father for comfort, advice and intimacy. Seeking Him and remembering His character, promises and love sets the premise of how I respond to life's events. He alone with grace and the power of His love can handle the full gambit of emotions including but not limited to sadness, conflict, grief, joy, frustration, injustice, fear, rejection, excitement and silliness. His word, prayer and Godly council are what I consider and act upon.
An unspoken rule I learned is when asked how are you, you say fine, how are you? End of story. Neat, clean and you both get credit for consideration and thoughtfulness even if neither of you are telling the truth. There seems to be a compelling need to show our best, smartest, strongest. The pursuit of the American definition of success and dreaming has infiltrated our churches. The place to go and bond over our mutual ongoing need to become Christ-like becomes where you tell conversion stories and how 'you used to be'. Expressions of pity and prayer are spoken for those that are making unwise choices, but that surely isn't us. We are the church. We are saved. We have no problems, ahem.... We talk of others, health, jobs-- those things that happen to us but do not reflect any weakness or failure in, not our armor of God but, our personal armor of reputations, acceptance and success of the great Christian. We deserve and strive for worth to be included and belong in the inner circle of successful church attenders. The facade is extremely difficult and draining to maintain for extended periods of time. Maybe it was just me trying so hard to belong, to put my past behind me and say, please accept me. Please show me the kindness, forgiveness and acceptance that Christ has. Show me the lies I've been told indeed are not true and that you will accept me even when I show you I'm not perfect.
In the end, not everyone is going to want to be my friend. Not everyone will see the good in me. Not only will everyone not agree with me but will do so to the degree that agreeing to disagree or growth through respectful discussion isn't an option. I will hurt, disappointment and frustrate those around me, we all will. Disagreements and differences of opinions are inevitable. Personality styles and approaches alone can bring tension and misunderstandings. The decision to love with the love of Christ is divine and only possible through His grace. Each of our definitions and unspoken expectations of a "Christian" effects our reception of each other. We are all the walking wounded in one form or another in this fallen world and it would be amiss of me to elevate those that appear to have all the spiritual, family of origin, financial, educational and physically appealing advantages with an ensuing negative label. I would be buying into and enlarging the gap between the haves and have-nots. We all struggle.
For me, that's the great equalizer, that's the safety. We all have successes too and there is a rejoicing in that. But we live in a very performance driven world and those humanistic values seep in subtly in goal setting, organizing, achievements, certifications, diplomas, medals, accomplishments. Go, do, earn, prove, gain, accumulate. Within the church body, there is talk of pulling the emotions, growing the numbers, defending the status quo, gripping on to traditions as if it were our salvation. They slowly define our worth. Failure or success? To what end? In whose eyes? All of that can be taken away. Relationships, finances, material goods and services. We have the daily opportunity to use these comforts, advantages and results of modern technology for God. Rather we spend the time on our own momentary happiness of whatever the entertainment culture sets as the acceptable in dress, language, morals, values, violence. We, like the frog in the pot on the stove put in ever so slowly warming water, just continue to adapt and fail to be aware of our own impending future if we stay in that environment.. There is nothing new under the sun. The human life experience is a struggle for everyone. It's a different area of difficulty for each of us and that can set a foothold for comparison and pride. The "I don't struggle with that" puffed up mind set. "I'm doing God's will" and assuming that should be God's will for everyone. We seek validation sometimes in how many people are with us and sometimes in in our conviction that if we alone go against mainstream that in itself proves our righteousness. 'They must not have great faith or aren't mature enough' labels abound secretly, quietly, smugly. No one regardless of a myriad of talents, blessings or gifts is exempt from the pain that comes with life. Should all of our energy be focused on escaping pain, we all will surely miss the beauty. Press in to God, seek his strength, power and grace to allow refinement and most of all His glory and the power of the Gospel. Mistaking God's blessings as His approval of our decisions is equally faulty logic. God blesses every one of His children differently and not because we're worthy.
The details of my time as a prodigal are insignificant unless it helps draw someone else closer to God and His purpose for their life. I live forgiven and accepted and I have no desire to search for the freedom I've already been given from anyone else. God knows my heart and my repentance, that's where it starts and ends. I don't owe anyone details or to hang my head in shame. I'm forgiven. I embrace tightly to that. It's the freedom of mercy and compassion. It's liberating and it's compelling. It's exhilarating and life changing. It's the healing of a heart that was searching for just that. Every heart wants what God has to offer. He made us to need Him. It would only make sense that the one who created the hole would be the single source to fill it up so completely with no reservation or strings attached. God continues to refine me and in so many ways I am not that person anymore. She is unrecognizable to me. Maybe part of it is the sheer passage of time, but that would be an incomplete answer at best and not giving credit to the Healer. I'm a new person in Christ. That, I'm not ashamed to talk about. Part of me will always feel like an outsider since my formative years were not spent in this culture and climate. But I know to the depths of my soul that I belong to Christ. Remembering my past reminds me of how magnificent the God I serve is. Satan no longer has a hold on me. That's the Gospel in my life.
God gave me a second chance and sometimes I sit back and survey the landscape of that which he has given since those darkest days and I'm overwhelmed. He's so generous. He's so lavish. I did not and will never 'deserve' this life I'm living. I will honor the giver of it all and serve Him with joy and thanksgiving to the depths of my soul. I will live out the forgiveness in humble service to Him with everything I have. Without Him I would not be here in so many ways figuratively and literally. He has saved me body, mind and soul. When people talk about how forgiveness might give a license for disobedience and further sinning, I'm so bewildered. I can only surmise they have never truly been forgiven for that which even they in their own hearts deemed unforgivable. Merely typing it brings tears to my eyes.
Make no mistake, I need to be renewed daily. I don't dare ever deceive myself that sin or even my greatest sins are a thing of the past. I'm a human being and sin is in me. I will never be perfect and that is not my pursuit. I was not saved merely for a life left to my own pleasures and comfort. I was saved for Him. I pray to recognize the daily calling where God directs to use me in my circle of influence. I pray for the courage to step out and be vulnerable sharing those events when it brings someone else comfort or a kinship of struggle or that someone else knows the church is not a daunting place filled with people that can't be real or for what ever purpose God has in store that is too complex for me to fully understand this side of Heaven. The church is every believer and for 13 years that has included me. I bring the testimony of a changed life. I bring myself- flawed, goofy, quirky, needy, crafty, with the gift of mercy that God has bestowed on me, over thinking, sometimes over sharing, awkward, weird little me. Use me how ever you'd like, God.
Maybe it was watching the powerful story of how the grace of Christ changed a man's life and heart in Les Miserables the other night or maybe it's because next Thursday is the anniversary of my baptism that these words are calling to be said. I pray what ever the catalyst, I never forget the amazing grace that saved a wretch like me. As always, I also pray that God would use these words from these kinds of posts for His purposes. Amen
